  • 2 Western Carolinian/September 2, 1982 LETTERS Brouwerism Controversy Smoulders Dear Editor, My hat goes off to the Cullowhee Covenant Fellowship for thinking of us poor hot students trying to get through registration and drop-add and having tree sott dunks for us. 1 must say I was impressed by the soft— sell of themselves. From my experience with churches, it is "we'll give you something, but you've got to give/is something." But these folks asked tor nothing in return, 1 suppose, unless they want you to become a Christian or join their church or attend then services At least they didn't ask for money or comer you. I appreciate that approach. And I for one would probably want to find out more about this group if I was looking for a church or wanted to know more about Christianity. Sincerely, Paul Watson Dear Editor, Concerning the inevitable inclement weather that is already upon us and will remain with us, as returning students know, I feel that being a victim of theft it is my duty to warn fellow students that there are low-life beings on campus who call themselves students. These words arc- written following a theft of an umbrella from the cafeteria. This was an expensive umbrella, and therefore, this letter is to inform the person who stole it that he is a rump-led runyon. Thank you Shakespeare. Sincerely, Mark Hotchkiss estern (Earolmiatt Larry Hardin Editor in Chief PO Box 66 Cullowhee 28723 Telephone 227-7267 To the Editor, In the recent article on the Brouwers. they said one thing that remotely made sense. They protested the lable "Neo-Nazi". 1 agree. That is like calling their friends the KJu Klux Klan indifferent to Blacks, and I am sure such loyal Nazis resent their devotion being overlooked. Sarcasm aside. I have never read such sick, paranoid and demented garbage in my life! How can any intelligent human being call the Klu Klux Klan. one of the worst blights on the face of the earth, an acceptable organization, or say that the worst man who ever lived. Adolph Hitler, was right about anything but killing himself Mr. and Mrs. Brouwer claim to be good Christians and Americans, but 1 could have sworn that Christianity taught love, and 1 know it says in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal (I suppose the delegates were more KGB agents according to Brouwerism). Brouwei makes totally insane accusations about the religious and political beliefs ol teachers at Western. Even if they were communists or whatever, (they have a right to be) every student here is IX years old or older, and is hardly a child that could be led like a sheep into believing anything the teacher tells him or her. I hey also claim that sex education would encourage promiscuity, but everything I have ever read on the subject indicates it would do the opposite. (Also, it has always amazed me that a far-right Christian would trust a teacher to lead a religious ceremony, prayei in school, but not to teach them about sex, which they need to know.) Brouwer's comments about blacks can only be regarded with disgust and disbelief. If the brain of a black person were any different from the brain of a white person's, it would be common knowledge (and please don't try to tell me its a communist coverup, or I'll get violently ill). Canabaihsm was very, very rare in Africa. no matter how many bad Tar/an movies you've seen. No matter who sold the slaves originally, it was wrong to buy them. And for brutality to your fellow man, we great white Americans have no room to talk. The enslavement of blacks, destruction of Indians and their culture, and the imprisonment of Japanese- Americans in World War 11, are only a few examples. Brouwer's fantasy about Klan history probably doesn't merit comment, but there are a few especially glaring errors. There were no blacks in power in the south until recently. The carpetbaggers were white men, and any raping was done by the Union Soldiers. And finally the Klan was and is devoted to overthrowing the government and returning the south to power. Mr. Brouwer's ideas about Jews is very confusing. He alternates between them and the communists as the cause of all problems. He even suggests that the two groups are friendly. I wish he would tell the Russian Jews that they are friendly with the communists who murdered them in great numbers in Stalin's purges and who still persecute them today. I bet they would be amazed to hear that. I think his best comment was about Henry Kissinger, however. Detente, the policy that kept peace between us and and Russia was the worst thing ever. Don't worry, Mr. Brouwer. Ronald Reagan will remedy that situation soon. Finally. 1 would like to answer his question about whether we have many people who disagree with him. I hope so. Mr. Brouwer. I'd hate to be going to a school where people agree with you. Sincerly, Curtis Pete Dear Editor, I have become concerned that there are some people who are trying to imply that the members of the Concerned Citizens Group do not support Western Carolina University. 1 have spent a great deal of time trying to compose a letter that would express my feeling on that point of view. 1 have read and reread the eclosed letter and somehow could tind no better way to say how 1 feel about Western Carolina L'niverity than my dad said it. This letter appeared in the July 15. 1982 edition of the Western Carolinian: Since the controversy in regard to Western Carolina University's competition with local business has arisen. 1 would like to clarity some items. 1 am only one ol a number of businessmen and women who have expressed concern. I was asked to be the spokesman loi the group at a meeting held Julv 8. 1982. 1 wish to emphasize that this group ot supporters are long-time supporters ot WCl Many of these people- have worked to help Wit Sonic were here when most ot the University's students were from Western North Carolina and most ol the contributions came from local citizens. No only have 1 gone to classes there lor the last 25 yea. s, but 1 distmc.lv remember being carted to the ballgames m my sleepers when WCU had all their football games at night. 1 have lor many years been a strong supporter ol their athletic programsand many of their academic programs. In fact. I attempted to join the Big Cat C tub as a single woman and could find no one who would take my money for membership. 1 can remember when it was long distance to call Sylva, when the cafeteria was in Moore Dormitory and the only building below McKee was Re.d Gym All this old age reminiscing is merely to point out that mv connections to WCL have extended a period of ove.
