4 Western Carolinian/September 2, 1982 Student loans tough to collect Campus What with all the commotion about cuts in federal spending for educational loans, recent revelations about some graduates who aren't paying back their loans come at a particularly bad time. One lawyer working for the Department of Education is pulling down S34,000 a year after a raise of $12,000. He owes S4,000 on a student loan but the government has vet to see a penny. And since the lawyer has filed for bankruptcy to relieve himself of 90 percent of his debt, the government never will see repayment. Sen. Charles Percy, R.-I1L, is mad about this and other incidents where loans are not being repaid even though former students now have federal jobs and the financial means to do so. Percy says the situation has gotten to the point where 37,000 to 70,000 federal employees are holding their jobs with little or no intention of paying back their federal student loan. The total amount outstanding is $3.3 billion and Percy held a subcommittee meeting recently to let these debtors know that the money came in the form of loans and not gifts from "Uncle Sam." Congressional auditors say the number of men who have avoided registering for the draft is increasing—even in the face of government threats of prosecution. A total of 700,000 men have failed to register, according to government figures, for the period ending in June. During that period, registration ran about 15 percent below the previous compliance rate of 93 percent. Spokesmen for the Reagan Administration disagree with those figures provided by the General Accounting Office. They say only 674,000 men have failed to comply. ")lJtojJm90.8 + Yesterday's * Sun.
