Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2013-03-02

  • The show begins with Amy’s story “The Little Girl I Grew Up With,” which is about her inner child and the wisdom of children. The story is accompanied by “When You Wish Upon a Star” by Jo Northup and Richard Birt. Doreyl’s guest on Creative Corner is Heather Gordon. She is the Director of Youth Development for Jackson County 4-H. Heather relates the history of 4-H and how agricultural life has changed over the past 100 years. She discusses what 4-H does in the local community. The interview is followed by “Whatever Happened to the Yodeling Cowgirls” by the Butterpats. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy continues her interview with L. Scott Philyaw from the Mountain Heritage Center. He talks about the role of the center as well as the relationship of Western Carolina University to the surrounding community. “You’ll Grow Into It” by Terry Edwards concludes the interview. Robert’s guest on Stories of the Cherokee is Kristy Maney Herron. She is a photographer for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Creative Resources Coordinator. Kristy is of Navajo and Cherokee descent and shares the cultural distinctions between the tribes. She also talks about Cherokee art and its place in the culture. “Quail Dance” by (James) Bo Taylor follows the interview. On Down Another Road, Judy continues her conversation with Garius Hill. He contrasts the amount of live music in western North Carolina as opposed to New York, and also talks about his musical background. The interview is followed by one of Hill’s original improvisations. The show closes with “Wildwood Flower” by Henry Queen.
