Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2013-02-23
-
Amy opens the show with her story “Daddy’s Little Helper,” which is about her relationship with her father and her experiences helping him work on cars. On Creative Corner, Doreyl continues her interview with Brant Barnes. He goes into great detail about his work as a potter, discussing scientific and aesthetic aspects of his craft. “Orange Blossom Special” by Vance Trull follows the interview. Amy talks with L. Scott Philyaw on Stories of Mountain Folk. He is the director of the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University. Scott grew up in the Setzer’s Gap community near Collettsville, North Carolina. He contrasts family life in the past to the way it is now, and also discusses the importance of stories and oral history as they relate to local culture. The interview is followed by “Flop Eared Mule” by Raymond Fairchild. On Black Roots of Appalachia, Victoria’s guest is Sibyl Davis Blakely. She shares her memories of growing up and living in the Locust Creek community of Sylva. “High, Low and Wide” by the Golden Gate Quartet concludes the interview. Judy’s guest on Down Another Road is Garius Hill, a musician and filmmaker who currently lives in Madison County, but grew up in rural Kentucky. He talks about spending summers in the Bryson City area, and also talks about his affection for animals, with a particular emphasis on bears. The interview is followed by his rendition of “Amazing Grace.” The show closes with “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by the Asheville Muses.
