Stories of Mountain Folk

Stories of Mountain Folk

In 2008, Catch the Spirit of Appalachia (CSA), a western North Carolina not-for-profit 501c3 organization, began recording "Stories of Mountain Folk," a radio program that captured interviews from local and regional people, aired weekly on local radio station WRGC through December 2015. Stories of Mountain Folk explore the nature and significance of oral history and storytelling to advance the understanding of the cultures of Western North Carolina. Featuring interviews, memories, discussions and stories from Caucasian, African-American, and Cherokee people living in the Great Smoky Mountain range, the interviewers actually went into the homes of the people to assure them a “safe” place to tell their stories. With a goal to save the heritage of the area and preserve its “sense of place,” Catch the Spirit of Appalachia has now produced the largest oral history collection in Western North Carolina. This all-sound collection of radio programs, broadcast until 2016, was produced by Catch the Spirit of Appalachia, a North Carolina not-for-profit. Created from a series of interviews, over 200 radio programs capture “local memory” detailing traditions, events, and life stories of mountain people.
