  • I able. This term will be found in S. M. Dugger's (P. O. Banner's Elk, N. C.) 'Balsam Groves of the Great Father, published as far back as 1892, and it was in my vocabulary even earlier. "Ottaray" is the old historic term in use by most of the Cherokees and by all of our white chroniclers of Colonial days. "Ottalay" is the provincial pronunciation now in use by the Indians in Swain county. "CHUCKET JOE."
