  • road another 5 miles to Cosby, stopping at "Uncle" Marshall Justice's home. We will then hike about half a mile to Valentine's Cabin, where we will probably spend the night. It is approximately 5 miles from here to the top of Mt. Guyot. The trail is steep, but not so rough and rocky as the LeConte trail. From the cabin, the trail turns left and follows along the left bank of the creek, up a gentle slope and thru a region of extra large trees. After passing thru a mile or more of this beautiful virgin forest, the trail grows steeper and steeper until it reaches the crest or divide on the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. Here we turn right along the state line and follow over one peak and a dip. In this dip we will see the Greenbrier trail coming in from our right, but we keep straight ahead to the main peak. Here we will find a tall tower which we will climb and look out across the dense balsam forest and get an unobstructed view of the many surrounding peaks, ridges, gorges and coves. The views of Mt. Le Conte, to the west, and Mt. Lumadaha, to the southwest, are especially interesting. English Mountain, to our north, does not seem nearly so high as it did when we passed it on the Sevierville-Newport road. From the tower we can clearly see the contrast between the virgin forests on the Tennessee side and the cutovef and burned mountainsides on the North Carolina side. There is a rough lean-to for shelter, half a mile down the Greenbrier trail, if needed. There |8 plenty of wood for a fire. By-the-way, there is a bear tran on the north side of the trail near the intersection of the Greenbrier trail. Don't fail to see it. This is one of our best hikes—and at the best time of the year. All our hardiest hikers should make it. Leave your troubles behind, unless they are old enough to hike. Let's go! Leave Saunders System at 1 o'clock. Bring canteen (there is NO water on top) and food for 3 meals. Bring blankets and poncho, and don't forget the candle lantern. Round trip hiking distance 31
