Camp of Asheville, one of Western North Carolina's best known women in education, will be honored here Saturday, Oct 19, during Western Carolina University homecoming festivities. A portrait of Dr. Camp, commissioned by members of her family, will be unveiled in the Cordelia C. Camp Laboratory School on the university campus. The school was named In her honor to commemorate her 23 years as a member of the Western Carolina faculty. It was completed in 1964 at a cost of more than $1,100,000. Brown Jr., vice president for admi- minstration, Is in charge of arrangements for the ceremony. He was one of Dr. Camp's students. Miss Camp attended the University of North Carolina, receiving the bachelor of art* degree there in 1920. She earned her master of arts degree from Columbia University in 1925. She taught In the public schools of the state for eight years, served a* supervisor of schools In Forsyth County for four years and In Burke County for three years. During that time, she also served for two years on the UNC summer school faculty. She joined the faculty of Cullowhee State Normal School in 1927, and for the next 23 years remained a member of the Instructional staff. The name' of the institution became Western Carolina Teachers College two years after Miss Camp joined the staff, and it was in the field of teacher training that she became best known. Her keen interest in social studies and history have resulted in several books, including one on pioneer women teachers of the state, and another on Gov. Zeb Vance. Miss Camp retired in 1950, DR. Allen Business Offices Replaces Stttwdl Snack Bar The Stillwell snack bar which was closed last spring quarter Is being replaced by the Business Placement offices. However, according to James Kirkpatrick, WCU Business Director, if there is a demand from the students, refreshment machines will be provided for Stillwell basement. "The snack bar was closed because of complaints from Business Department concerning litter, congestion, and noise and in hopes of diverting business to the University Center Grill," says Student Body President, Charles Sutton. "Even though the old snack bar space Is being converted Into offices, I feel there is still a need to have some kind of facilities available for refreshment," states Sutton. "And there is room for vending machines in the basement," Kirkpatrick says he has not been contacted by Sutton or any other student concerning the machines. "I see no reason why we cannot have candy, drink, and cracker machines if the students want them." states Kirkpatrick. of 3331 Maywood Drive, Charlotte. She was a member of the 1967 Homecoming court and the 1968 May Court. An Elementary Education major, Miss Allen is head cheerleader and a sister of Sigma Kappa Sorority.
