Program of hikes for 1930/ Smoky Mountains Hiking Club

Members of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, under the direction of A. G. Roth, chairman of the Appalachian Trail committee, marked approximately 25 miles of this trail during 1929. The task is to be completed during the present year. It is likely that the first two weeks of July will be set aside for the completion of this trail thru the Smokies. It is suggested that members of the club who are interested in this work should plan their vacations for this time and help finish the opening and marking of this famous trail thru the Smokies. Side trails, or branch trails will, no doubt, lead off from the Appalachian Trail at various points. In the Smokies, such branch trails will probably be designated from Mt. Alexander (soon to be Mt. Chapman) to Mt. LeConte, from Siler's Bald thru the Nantahala Gorge to Fort Oglethorpe, and from Thunderhead or Gregory to Cades Cove. COMMITTEES From time to time the Club has numerous committees at work. Among the committees now functioning are: a nomenclature committee which is seeking original names for the peaks, ridges, gaps, streams and other features throughout the Smokies; one which is working out plans for building a Club Cabin in the Smokies; one which is hunting and marking springs along or near the various trails, especially along the high and dry state line; one which is seeking new trails, routes or destinations of interest. Other committees will be named as the occasion demands. Suggestions for suitable activities or for the benefit of the Club in any way are invited by officers of the Club. They should be mailed to P. In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1930 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
