  • each 24 ft. wide and 8 ft. high, and the dam 12 ft. wide at the top. At Waterville can also be seen the giant concrete surge tank 48 ft. in diameter and rising 178 ft. above ground set over a 600 ft. shaft. To see the power house with the big turbines and generators, copper roof and 150 ton crane, is alone worth the trip. From Waterville we have an easy trail to Mt. Sterling about one mile following the railroad up Big Creek. Just beyond Mt. Sterling Station, a road crosses the track and another comes into it on the right hand side of the track. We follow this up the railroad on the right hand side to a quaint old mill on Chestnut Branch Creek. Here we follow Chestnut Branch Creek to the right along an old log road to its head and then up the lead to White Rock, or Sharp Top. If the day is fair, Knoxville can be seen from this point. The elevation is about 5200 ft. There is a good spring about 200 yards from the top and in wet weather, water runs out about 5 ft. below the summit. The view from this point is unexcelled and well worth the effort. We will eat dinner near the top, before returning. An 8 ft. geological survey route is cleared along Phillips Divide to the right and we may return by this to a log road at the head of Tobe's Creek and by this to Brown, a point on the railroad about 3 miles above Hartford. Here we take the afternoon bus into Hartford. Horses may be ridden over either route to within 2 miles of the top. The round trip is about 12 miles. Only one or two miles are steep climbing and the steepest of this is on return down grade. Leave Saunders System at 1 p. m. sharp. Round trip hiking distance 12 miles. Trail good but steep in places. Cost: transportation, approximately $4.50; lodging and meals, $2.00. Bring food for Sunday dinner. Don't forget candle lantern and canteen. Leaders: Frank Wm. Taylor (Morristown) and W. W. Stanley (Phone 2—5233). 65
