follows that this might possibly be a foreword to some hike-to-be. "Quoth the Raven, 'nothing but'". C'est ici! Gregory's Bald! The words themselves hold somewhat of a fantastical enchantment, but stop! Relax your muscles! Close your eyes and let your mind float out with me! Here we are, the Hiking Club—yourself included, far above the noise and confusion of a restless world. Here we are out in God's Great Out-of- Doors! We have passed along fairy-like trails, winding up and up to where "The Mountains kiss high heaven", along which trails the first signs of the approaching springtime are in evidence by the bright greens of the early plants; the tiny, friendly, nodding blossoms of mountain flowers. The cool, caressing breezes, laden with perfumes peculiar only to early spring, greet us and bid us a hearty welcome to the treasures in store. We have surmounted our first pleasant barrier on our trip to Gregory's Mystical Mountain. We are now looking down into the peaceful valley known as Cades Cove. Beautiful beyond words! "Until you have seen it, you can not imagine it; after you have seen it you cannot describe it!" But the Cove is there—as for the description,— I'll leave that for you to see. Our trail into this wonderland assumes a downward trend, winding down and down, backward and forward in switchbacks of breath-taking, awe- inspiring curves and pitches, yet ever down. The view? That too I will leave for you to see. We're down at last! Which way now? To the right! Our trail leads us on around the Cove now bathed in rich golds, deep orange tints and purplish hues as the sun sinks gradually in the western skies.^ Nature is truly "Painting the sky with sunshine". In this glow we are able to see Gregory's Bald lifting its massive head some five thousand feet above the level of the sea, outlined against the evening sky casting its deep, mysterious and phantom-like shadows across the floor of the 15

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1930 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
