C, — 5__ aims of the Association as well as what has already be§n accomplished by this organization. The Association Mhould not forget that in December of this year it. will again be necessary to send a Committee to Washington and that some provision at this time should be made for raising the necessary funds. As Secretary, T would call yoxir attention to the fact that most, of the funds already raised have been raised in Asheville, J^V While a few of the neighboring towns have expressed themselves as being greatly interested, with the exception cf Waynesville and Charlotte there has been no material assistance rendered. Knoxville especially has never taken this matter up and although the papers cf that city » contain frequest articles in favor of the Park and claims that Knoxville will be the natural gate to the same, they have thus far not responded to our appeal for financial assistance. Appalachian National Park Association secretary Ambler drafted this memorandum to the president and members of the association. Chase P. Ambler (1865-1932) was a founding member and long-time secretary of the association. He reports that there are currently 163 paid memberships, a mailing list of 914 addresses, and a file of newspaper clippings numbering 960. The memorandum goes on to describe a July 1901 visit to North Carolina headed by Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson (1835-1920) to assess sites for a possible national park and forest reserve.
