  • Suffolk Sanatorium, Holtsville, L.I., N.Y., Nov. 24, 1940. Dear Leonard; I have been writing Mama about the possibility of our writing and publishing a Life of Horace Kephart. She says she has sent my letter “around the family” to get their reactions, but she herself is not at all enthusiastic. You know how she feels about “disclosing one’s private affairs to the public;” but I have tried to point out to her that Papa had a public life & the contribution he made to his time that we should concentrate on. He was unique in many ways, and what he did was unique, and I do not think we should allow it to be forgotten. Doubtless she will send you my letter so I shan’t repeat it now. I have written her again elaborating my idea. But I should like to know what suggestions you have to make concerning it. The most valuable material is, of course, in North Carolina and you have nearer access to it than anyone. I am very anxious to get some of his letters. The family have destroyed all they had of his -- which I bitterly regret, but that can’t be helped now. As a child I remember seeing a
