  • J. A. HOLMES, State Geologist. NORTH CAROLINA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, CHAPEL HILL, N. C. f N0v«Lb er 4, 1901, Dr. C, P, Amblert Asheville N. C. My dear Sir: I wired you last Friday from Winston as follows: "I have ordered copy of November World's Work sent to each Member of Congress"• I have also written to some thirty of the Congressmen whom I knew were personally interested in this measure asking them to write to a number of their special friends in Congress from other states calling their attention to this article on the Southern Appalachian Porest Reserve, by Mr, McGee. I do not know just when Professor Shaler's article in the North American Review is likely to appear; indeed, I am not absolutely sure thathe has as yet written it, but I hope we may hear from it before very long. It will probably be necessary for me to spend a considerable portion of November in Washington helping in the preparation of the Secretary's final report to Congress on this subject. As to the payment for these copies of the World's Work: I have no money in hand, nor do I suppose that you have any which could be used for this purpose; so I will try and raise a sufficient quantity in some other way, Youra sincerely, State Geologist,
