Smathers; Dear Sir:- Replying to your letter eelative to the Forest reserve I will say that the gentlemen were not looking at the right action of the General Assembly, A concurrent Resolution has not the force of law with us "but we did pass an act entitled "An Act to give Consent by the State of South Carolina to the acquisition "by the United States of such lands as may be needed for the establishment of a national Forest reserve in said State*" This hill was passed and hacame a law en the 21st of Feb*y and is found at page 609 of the Statutes cf 1901. The statutes for the year can he gotten for Si,00 from Bryan Printing Co, Columbia, S. C. If there is anything else I can do for yoxitf I will he glad to serve you. This series of letters has to do with legislation proposed by the by the Appalachian National Park Association. On January 4, 1900, the association submitted a Memorial to Congress; on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park; several states passed resolutions in support of the park; in January 1901, President McKinley expressed support of the project. Although the organization had success early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905.
