  • In this letter of February 22, 1861, Cathey writes to Siler regarding Siler's publication of proceedings of a meeting at which Cathey was heard to have supported North Carolina's secession from the United States. Cathey offers clarification of his political views in the letter and indicates that the letter is intended for publication, so that the public will have a more accurate understanding of his thoughts.

Siler Dear sir In the last No. of your paper I see published the proceedings of a meeting held at Waynesville on the 8th inst. as communicated to you In which I am made to say that I was in favor of N.C. sesceding with a view to reconstruction &c.” I did say I was identified with the South as stated in the communication, and I further said that N.C. would not have her convention in session until after Lincoln would be in office, and would have indicated his policy, which if it should be to Carry out the Chicago platform, and we should fail to get an ajustment on the Crittenden plan, or the Virginia plan, or otherwise, then I thought Virginia and all the Border slave states would go out of the union, and I would then be for N.C. going out as stated in the Communication you published. -- Now I will not say I have used the precise language here that I did on that ocasion, as I spoke without notes; and I now write by memory, but this I do know that these are the sentiments that I then intended to convey, and that I now hold.-- You will please give this a place in your paper at your erlyest convienance so that I may be set right before the public. and _____ ____ _____ may go yours Very Truly J.
