  • Susie’s letter told of the latest family operation. Pep was found with a leg broken. This meant a trip to the vet + the incarceration of Pep in the cellar. The splint was to be removed soon, so that was that. The Fernow’s had a great send off. They arrived here about six Wed. p.m.; Manton drove them down. He, M.E. + David went to George’s to sleep. Thur. the crowd was here for dinner. Fri. morning, Feb. 10, we took our lunch; ate at W Plains, then drove to the dock (15th St.), picking up Mrs. Bird on the way. Mrs. Fernow, Ethel + some Fernow cousins met us at the dock + Margaret showed up soon after. It made quite a party. Mrs. F lost her hand bag which had her passport in it. This caused a flutter until George found Karl had it. It took him, Karl, all the available time to get his precious potatoes aboard. He had permits etc. from Washington but there was plenty of red tape at that. The Fernow address is Dr. Karl H. Fernow To Dr. Schaffnit Institute für Pflanzenkrankheiten Bonn, Germany
