Loaded Weapon Dan Warlick FilmCritic Once again, the comical geniuses of National Lampoon have created a hilarious tribute to some of Hollywood's recent action movies. Emilio Estevez and Samuel L. Jackson lead an all-star cast through a campy police adventure. Police sergeants Colt (Estevez) and Luger (Jackson) investigate the death of Sgt. Billy York (Whoopie Goldberg) and the disappearance of an important strip of microfilm. Their supervisors have allowed them to have total control of the investigation. William Shatter (Star Trek, TJ Hooker) portrays General Mortars, a paramilitary drug dealer trying to create a city of drug addicts. The missing microfilm contains the missing part of the process. His success depends on the speed and accuracy of Colt and Luger's quest for truth and knowledge. The fate of the city rests on the shoulders of these two super- CONTACT LENS Absoluts lowest prices! 99' AP* I $69?£! 100% Satisfaction! ' 'Send Name,Address,Rx and check! Viewers should recognize parodies of such movies as Lethal Weapon I, II, III, Basic Instinct, 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, Rambo, Commando, Silence of the Lambs and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Audiences may also recognize cameo appearances by Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox (CHIPS), James Doohan (Star Trek), Charlie Sheen (Hot Shots) and many more. This is the first time Wilcox and Estrada have worked on a project together since Wilcox left the CHIPS series on a sour note. The number of familiar faces adds to the fast pace of the movie as each briefly appears with an established and witty expression. Loaded Weapon is a movie of extremes. If you imagine the previously mentioned movies and consider their serious attempts for action, drama and glamour, Loaded Weapon will attempt to look at them from an extreme comical view. Director Gene Quintano presents an array of stereotypical situations from a warped point of view. From the opening sequences, viewers should at least smile as familiar things are presented. Loaded Weapon is a very visual movie. Viewers never know from one scene to the next who may appear or what a familiar actor/actress may do. To describe a sample scene in this article would not be nearly as effective as seeing it on the big-screen. The dialogue has a degree of humor to it. Like many noted authors', the names of characters reflect certain character traits. For example, the names of Luger and Colt represent-the smaller, less powerful role of police officers when compared to the handguns their names share. General Mortars'name represents the power of the criminal drug lords in today's society as compared to the destructive, yet portable, mortar weapons of the military. Little correlations such as these are found throughout the movie. Viewers may have to think about some of the dialogue before the humor is realized. If missed, however, it is no big deal. The visual humor of the movie is funnier and more obvious than the oral humor. Emilio Estevez appears to thoroughly enjoy his character. I think this is some of his best acting since The Breakfast Club or Young Guns. I feel Estevez has had difficulty losing his younger "Brat Pack" identity. Several of his more recent movies have lacked his youthful flair and flamboyance. Loaded Weapon takes him out of a serious role and allows him to have the fun he had as a youth. I give Loaded Weapon three and a half stars out of a possible five for humor, spontaneity, acting and dialogue. This is a funny movie. It is nowhere close to the magnitude of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation or Naked Gun. It is, however, good, (relatively) clean humor for most members of the family. I enjoyed it. I smiled constantly and left feeling less serious than when I had entered. Loaded Weapon is a great way to escape stress and it may even help you look at life from a new perspective. There is not much to figure out. It seems to traverse from one farcical situation to another. The slapstick humor reflects the general comments all viewers have made about the generic scenes present in so many movies for unknown reasons. Do not expect a deep movie. I sat through the entire movie, smiled, laughed, and then it seems to have suddenly ended. I wondered what viewers are suppose to learn from it. Then I thought about a number of scenes I enjoyed and realized I have often made the same types of comparisons. Just see the movie. I think ACTUAL RETA1L VALUES ENCE Each ;■■■ rendition - oni?
