Born—to Mr. and Mrs. Troy Sheffield, a boy, December 27th. COLLETON The Colleton Mill is closed down for repairs for a week and will start again January 1st. Mrs. Ruth Jones spent Christmas at her home at Snider's Cross Roads. Mr. James Moore and wife of Asheville, North Carolina, are spending Christmas with Mr. B. F. Smith and family. Mr. Irvin Troutman of Concord, North Carolina, is spending the week end with E. H. Troutman and family. Mr, J. B. Sanders and family spent Christmas with his mother at Islandton, South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Allendale, South Carolina, are visiting the latter's sister, Mrs. H. O. Wynne. Miss Ruth Wynne of Petersburg, Virginia, was called here on account of the illness and death of her brother, Mr. G. C. Pate. Colleton Camp Store and Mr. St. Claire, the Manager G. C. PATE G. C. Pate and his son, Gordon After an illness of eleven days, G. C. Pate, who was mill foreman at Colleton, expired on December 26th, 1923. He leaves his wife and three children, Artyce, 14 years of age; Gordon, 4 years, and Donald, 7 weeks. Mr. Pate was born November 6, 1884, at Havelock, North Carolina, and was reared on a farm. At the age of sixteen years he went to work on a sawmill in Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1906, when he went to Colleton to work for The Colleton Cypress Company under the management of Haws & Sabin. He remained at Colleton when Mr. Ritter bought the company and worked there up to the time of his death. His first job was Superintendent of the Planing Mill, then Foreman of the Lath and Shingle Mill. After filing saws for a time he was promoted in 1916 to the position of Mill Foreman, which place he held at the time of his death. In 1908 Mr. Pate was married to Miss Georgia Godwin of Havelock, North Carolina. He was a member of Carters Ford Baptist Church, Hope Lodge F. & A. M., and Dalcho Consistory 32nd degree, and Omar Shrine Temple. Mr. Pate's work was always well done and he had an enviable reputation in his chosen line of work. His character and reputation were above reproach. He leaves many friends in Colleton and elsewhere who mourn his loss. We are glad to announce that all those on the sick list are improving —namely: Mrs. G. W. Patrick; Mrs. W. O. Wynne; Mrs. J. C. Harrison; Mrs. H. W. Varn; and Mrs. W. V. Carlton. Born—To Mr. and Mrs. Madison Smith, a daughter. The Colleton Hunting Club have launched their boat, "The Silver Spray." We extend an invitation to Columbus office force to join us any time on a duck hunt. For particulars see S. L. Calfee. Miss Alice Carlton spent a few days in Savannah, Georgia. MABEN The third number of the Lyceum Course, which is held under the ausnices of the Board of Managers of the Maben Community Club, was given on Saturday night, December 15th, at the Community Building. Mr. Bergderfer, a well known Lecturer and Impersonator, entertained a large and appreciative aud- The Christmas Tree Entertainment given at the Community Building Monday evening, December the 24th, was well attended and a nice treat was provided and enjoyed by all the children. Mr. S. E. Young, Superintendent of the Sunday School, had charge of arrangements and proved himself to be the right man in the right place. Mr. Jervis acted as Santa Glaus, and judging from the manner in which he handled the job, he must be an old hand at the business. The end of the old year finds our new hotel well under course of construction, and providing we are not held up on account of lack of supplies and necessary equipment, we Elizabeth Manning, little daughter of Mr. R. E. Manning, store manager at Colleton Twelve

“The Hardwood Bark” was a publication produced “for the employees of the W.M Ritter Lumber Co.” William McClellan Ritter (1864-1952) organized the company in 1901 and, from 1903 until 1926, the company operated on Hazel Creek in Swain County, North Carolina, before moving its operations to Nantahala. Published during the 1920s, the monthly newsletter typically ran to about 25 pages. “The Hardwood Bark” was filled with articles on the Ritter company and the timber industry, but also included local stories. The pages included in this collection were selected because they relate to communities within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The town of Ritter was near the junction of Hazel Creek and the Little Tennessee River; a sawmill was built at Proctor, about four miles north of Ritter. The town of Ritter has long since been abandoned and Proctor is beneath the waters of Fontana Lake.
