Carson spent a few days here recently getting us lined up on grades. On Monday morning, February 25th, death invaded our ranks and took a real "old timer," (Lewis Medford. Mr. Medford was almost forty years old and had worked for the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company ever since the Hazel Creek Operation started. He leaves a wife and seven children, numerous other relatives, and scores of friends to mourn his death. Hazel Creek has lost a real Christian gentleman and the Company has lost a most loyal employe. On account of our sheds being filled almost to capacity, the planing mill production has been cut down to 7000 feet per day. Will someone ask Ed. Wilson, our shipping clerk, how many "Leap-year letters" he gets each week? Every evening numbers of people can be seen going to Doctor Riter's office. No, there isn't any epidemic of any kind in Proctor now (unless it's radio fever). Dr. Riter has a radio installed in his Joe Swan, Assistant Parquetry Machinist at Hazel Creek. HAZEL CREEK (Concluded) Mr. Joe Hayes, former manager of Hazel Creek Store but now at McClure, irade a short visit in Proctor recently. Mr. Speed Hall, who has been in Akron, Ohio, visiting his brother, Raymond, has returned to Proctor. Everyone in Proctor was shocked to hear of Mr. Fally Medford's death, February 25th at 2 A. M. He has been in the service of the Company for several years, and is survived by his wife and several children. B. E. Mansberger, Hazel Creek's Dry February 14th, Proctor Literary Kiln Foreman. We wonder if Bruce and Mac could be induced to give out the secret of how they get up so early every morning. Grandsons of C. A. Sanderson, of Maben, W. Va.; Carl L. Vance, age 3 years, and Joyce Vance, age 18 months. MABEN Mr. H. A. Adams, our band saw filer, was called home on February 8th on account of the death of Mrs. Adams' father, which occurred at Davis, W. Va., due to a wreck of the logging engine on the plant of the Babcock Lumber Company. We are glad to report in this issue that Mr. C. H. Jones is improving nicely. Mr. Jones is still confined to the hospital and we understand that it will be some time before he is able to return to work. Mrs. Jones and little daughter, Charlotte, are yet at Butler, Tenn., taking care of Mrs. Jones' father, who is seriously ill. John Snead, formerly of Hazel Creek, is now located at Maben as edgerman on the left hand side. John knows how to do it just right, and we are glad to have him as one of our crew. Mrs. Octor Hoover of Fitzpatrick spent a few days recently at the ho.xie of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Turner during the illness of Mrs. Turner. J. E. Danielson, former mill grader at Hazel Creek, is now grading on the mill at Maben. Ernest Jervis, who was quite ill with pneumonia, has recovered and left for his home at Peterstown, West Virginia. “The Hardwood Bark” was a publication produced “for the employees of the W.M Ritter Lumber Co.” William McClellan Ritter (1864-1952) organized the company in 1901 and, from 1903 until 1926, the company operated on Hazel Creek in Swain County, North Carolina, before moving its operations to Nantahala. Published during the 1920s, the monthly newsletter typically ran to about 25 pages. “The Hardwood Bark” was filled with articles on the Ritter company and the timber industry, but also included local stories. The pages included in this collection were selected because they relate to communities within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The town of Ritter was near the junction of Hazel Creek and the Little Tennessee River; a sawmill was built at Proctor, about four miles north of Ritter. The town of Ritter has long since been abandoned and Proctor is beneath the waters of Fontana Lake.
