c 0 H' Library Sugarlands Visitor Center Nov.14, 1973 Dr. Dick lobst, Archivist Western Carolina University Cullowhee, N.C. 28723 Bear Dr. tobst: Recently I returned one of the Kephart Collection books, sending it to the Librarian, explaining that we had a more recent copji of the same title; Nelson's WILD ANIMALS OF NORTH AMERICA That had been on© of the nine titles requested for indefinite loan to our library en May 25, 1973. We find now that we have others book® on that list, Dillin- THE KENTUCKY RIFLE Sawyer - FIREARMS IN AMERICAN HISTORY 2 vols. Sawyer -OUR RIFLES which we do not need. We have secured other and more recent books en the subjectf therefore, w© can release these to you, since they are KEPHART books. Mv* Glen Cardwell will see that the books are delivered to you. This 1970s correspondence concerns the Kephart collection and its loan. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was a noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author. In 1904, he left his work as a librarian in St. Louis and permanently moved to western North Carolina. His popular book, “Camping and Woodcraft” was first published 1906; the 1916/1917 edition is considered a standard manual for campers after almost a century of use. Living and working in a cabin on Hazel Creek in Swain County, Kephart began to document life in the Great Smoky Mountains, producing “Our Southern Highlanders” in 1913. Throughout his life, Kephart wrote many articles supporting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
