Our own beautiful "Hazel Creek." 'Tis to such spots as this that our minds are ever turning. We might catch a trout and we'd have the fun of learning HAZEL CREEK (Concluded) is visiting her family in Proctor for several days. Mr. John Marshall, one of our former employees who is now employed in Chicago, arrived at Proctor to spend a couple of days with home folks. We understand that Mrs. E. B. On the night of May 27th Verne Bateman, accompanied by the store clerks from this place went on a fishing trip and caught some nice catfish. Mr. Tom McCollum, son of our Superintendent from Franklin, has accepted a position in the planing mill. Mr. B. Price of McClure, formerly of Hazel Creek, paid us a few days' visit recently. The Proctor theater is showing some of the best pictures that we have had the privilege of seeing for a long time. A litter of fourteen throughbred puppies owned by Mr. J. C. Godwin COLLETON Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Wynne and E. H. Troutman made a trip to Walterboro recently. Mr. E. J. Hall of Onedia New York, has accepted a position as machine setter in our planing mill. Mr. R. J. Brabham was called to his home at Williams, South Carolina, on account of the death of his uncle, Mr. William Brabham. We extend our sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. J. C. “The Hardwood Bark” was a publication produced “for the employees of the W.M Ritter Lumber Co.” William McClellan Ritter (1864-1952) organized the company in 1901 and, from 1903 until 1926, the company operated on Hazel Creek in Swain County, North Carolina, before moving its operations to Nantahala. Published during the 1920s, the monthly newsletter typically ran to about 25 pages. “The Hardwood Bark” was filled with articles on the Ritter company and the timber industry, but also included local stories. The pages included in this collection were selected because they relate to communities within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The town of Ritter was near the junction of Hazel Creek and the Little Tennessee River; a sawmill was built at Proctor, about four miles north of Ritter. The town of Ritter has long since been abandoned and Proctor is beneath the waters of Fontana Lake.
