The above Index is included with the idea that it will assist the hiker who suddenly feels a desire to go places when there is no scheduled hike. It lists hikes near town as well as those in the Smokies. No attempt has been made to give specific information for finding various trails as such information may be found in this and previous handbooks. The driving and hiking mileage is approximately correct according to available data. Many new trails are being constructed by the National Park Service and the C. C. C. Camps which will alter hiking distances to many points but little is known of them at present. Some of the week-end trips can be made in one day by hardy hikers if an early start is made. It is advisable to start early in the morning on all the trips except those marked for a half day or less. 61
