  • £ BILL Vor the purchase of a natioriai forest reserve in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. ."Be It enacted, etc. Sec. 1. The --Secretary of ' Agriculture is hereby empowered ,end directed-to purchase land-, suited to the purposes of a national ?orest reserve, in the Appalachian Mountains within the States of Virginia, Horth Carolika,*Bonth Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, in total extent not to exceed two million acres, and to care for, protect, use, and make accessible, the said forest 'reserve or any part Of it when so purchased. ■Sec. -2. The Secretary of Agriculture is hereby empowered arid 'directed; to make 'Such rules and regulations and establish such service'-'as he may deem-necessary for the care, protection, and use of such forest reserve, paid to sell such wood and timber as nay be removed without injur:/ to the forest: Provided, that no wood or timber shall!bB sold otherwise than by public auction, except to actual settlers, and in no case at less than the appraised value thereof, and Provided further, that the proceeds of such sale shell be covered into the Treasury of the United States. Sec. 3. Tiie sum of Five Rlillion Dollars, or as much thereof as may he required, Is nereby appropriated for the purcRnse of lends fof" a national forest reserve, as hereinbefore specified, \ said reserve to be known as the Southern Appalachian Forest Re— serve; and said Five Million Dollars shall be available until the expiration of the fiscal year 1910-1911 unless sooner expended.
