trend lately. | Hitcher do ot predecessor trom1986. The movie has a cast of somewhat young and upcoming superstars, including Sophia Bush, who many viewers know from her character on the CW's hit show One Tree Hill. Bush plays Grace Andrews, a college student who is about to embark on a spring break road trip with her boyfriend Jim Halsey, who is played by Zachary By Ryan Sarda WCnewsmagazine Have you ever heard the expression Mother knows best? Ever since the film Dreamgirls premiered in theatres on Christmas Day, my mother knew that | would be dragged to go see it. After weeks of refusal to see the film, my girlfriend told me to go see it with her, and of course, | did. The reason why | did not want to go see it was because | thought it was going to be a boring, Stupid movie. However, | will be the first to admit that | was dead wrong in my assumption. This movie drew me in right away. When the opening credits roll, you are instantly dazzled by creative staging, passionate performances, and the beauty of the three Dreamettes who take the stage. This adaptation of the Broadway musical was definitely worth forking over the 16 bucks to see. The story of this remarkable film revolves around the discovery and rising stardom of a trio of young women from D by Beyonc Knowles e@ @ @ By Katie Rat Matt (Four and a he of five) Matt Williams MySpace page boasts a folk rock/psychedelic/acoustic sound. To be frank, | didnt really know what that would sound like. But heres what | do know. This WCU graduate and mountain native is making this region buzz with his out-of-this-world music. Your Last Make-Believe is Williams second studio album, with another album nipping at its heels. Still a young man, Williams isnt at all new to the music world. He released his debut album, First Light, at age 16. And within a few short years, his intrepid and audacious exploration HoT different sounds has catapulted him to local a ee LO rt ow hw. & | a see nsec eieumimatest ast the road who is trying to hitch a ride because his . Soon enough, the rain comes: the side*of uring down. Jim notices amar car has broken down. When they meet again at convenience store, the couple doesnt even notice him. Hitcher, a.k.a. John Ryder (played by Sean Bean of 007: Goldeneye) asks if he could get a ride, so Grace and Jim accept. This no ordinary hitchhiker though. The man is an absolute psycho who tries to kill Jim and Grace. Dreamgirls is a must-see film by Anika Noni Rose) and Effie White ( played by Jennifer Hudson). After meeting manager Curtis Taylor ( played by Jamie Foxx) at an amateur night, the girls find themselves on tour with one of the countrys leading African-American entertainers, Jimmy Early (played by Eddie Murphy). As they tour the country, Curtis romances with the lead singer, Effie White, and slowly develops the girls as a solo act named the Dreams. ]The story of Dreamgirls is not what keeps the audience tuned in; its the fantastic performances from the star-studded cast that make this movie well-deserving of all the recognition it is receiving. Jamie Foxx, a previous Academy Award winner for his performance as Ray Charles in the movie Ray, adds to his rsum with another brilliant, but underrated performance as Curtis Taylor, Jr. Beyonc Knowles, already known for her vocal talent, still manages to deliver a rock- solid performance with her role as Deena Jones, or Beyonc were nominated @ @ @ stardom. Seriously, he even has a few Facebook fan groups. So it is possible to break his curiously tempting sound apart? Maybe. Songs can be mellow like Coldplay and often bold like Dave Matthews Band. Some season in a dash of Keane with a tiny throw-back hint of the Beatles. Others sound like nothing you've ever heard. Williams has such an eclectic and variant sound that you can barely put your thumb on him. And apparently he likes it that way. His Web site, mattwilliamsmusic. com, claims each live show is_ individually entertaining and unique. Responsible for playing aiks them, Jim and Grace z and struggle to no | : rid of this stalker once and forall. : This movie is pretty much one murderous event after anotherlots of shooting, killing, blood and gore. In terms, it is a slasher film and is not exactly one that | would recommend. 4 out of 5 stars for Oscars for their performances. The two most surprising stars in this movie were Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. Both Murphy and Hudson are up for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and rightfully so. A star has been born with Jennifer Hudson, who launched her career on American Idol. Hudson is a sure lock for the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Oscars. Murphy, on the other hand, completely took me by surprise. Remembering him from The Nutty Professor and Shrek, | never once thought Id see Murphy ever deliver a performance like he did in the movie. He played the role of Jimmy Early perfectly and might have re-vitalized his career with the sheer brilliance that he displayed. Dreamgirls was so much better than | ever would have expected it to be. | am urging everyone in the world to see the film; its worth every penny, trust me. By the end of the film, you will be applauding each character ag they are introduced. and looping each i as ten, Williams lays it on thick. | guess it doesnt matter who he sounds like, Matt Williams is carving out his own little niche in the world of music; and hes not going anywhere anytime soon. But dont take my word for it. Check out Matt Williams MySpace page at www.myspace. com/mwloops, or his personal music page at www. mattwilliamsmusic.com. Or better yet, come check him out live!
