  • MAY 1934 HIKE SUPERVISOR— HARRIETT FOWLKES MAY 5 and 6 KIPSHIN COUNTRY AND ROAN MOUNTAIN Leave Dixie System Saturday at 1 P. M. From Knoxville take Route HE through Mor- ristown, Greeneville and Johnson City to Eliza- bethton. There take Route 19 E through Hampton to a point 5% miles beyond the railroad crossing in Hampton. At this point (some 300 feet beyond an old water mill on the right of the road), turn right up the Tiger Creek road. This road climbs 1700 feet in six miles, then drops 100 feet in Roaring Creek valley down which it proceeds some three miles farther to Camp Phillip Nelson, where the night will be spent. (Blankets should be carried on this trip.) Round trip driving distance 270 miles. Sunday morning at 7 (E. S. T.), leave camp by car for Roan Mountain (elevation 6336 feet), going by Roan Mountain Station and Burbank— driving distance, 12 miles. At Burbank we can either hike up the Roan (round trip 14 miles) or proceed over a toll road, the charges being $1.00 per car and 25 cents for each passenger. Those who do not wish to make the trip to Roan, will find numerous delightful short hikes radiating from the camp—Little Rock, North Carolina (elevation 4700 feet, round trip hiking distance, 6 miles), the Ripshin (elevation 4700 feet, round trip hiking distance 6 miles), or down Roaring Creek Gorge and back over Nick's Heights (round trip distance 4 miles). 25
