  • water up to his neck. In the early days, there was a family by the name of Jeffries, who owned approximately 50,000 acres—78 square miles. They owned the land along the Citico Creek and on up into the mountains. Many years ago, several people went into Jeffries property to hunt, and some of them never returned. One of the Jeffries made the remark that he would go up into that country and come out, or go to "Hell" trying, and he never came out, due possibly to being lost, crippled, or killed. Up until this day, the cove into which Jeffries went has been called "Jeffries Hell." We have arranged for a young man who was born and reared in the vicinity to go on the hike with us. Besides being a good entertainer, he knows everything worth knowing about the territory into which we are going. He will be ready to inform us upon any subject pertaining to that part of the mountains. Leave Dixie System at 7:30 A. M., go directly through Maryville, out the Niles Ferry Pike, cross the bridge over the Little Tennessee River, and about % mile farther on, turn to the left, across the first concrete bridge over the Tellico River. We continue on that road as far as possible and then get out and walk. Leaving the cars at Haines' place, we walk up the trail along Citico Creek about three miles, cross over, and go up Jake's Best Creek to the falls, which are about forty or fifty feet high, where we have our lunch. If you want some good pictures, bring along your camera, and be assured you will get some beauties. The round trip driving distance is 108 miles, the hiking distance 8 miles. Bring food for one meal. Boots are desirable, though not necessary. Bring your canteen if you wish. Leaders: THOMAS W. CONNER (6-1671) E. P. "RED" CALLAHAN (3-0149) 49
