JUNE 1934 HIKE SUPERVISOR—ELVIE MANLEY JUNE 10 CHIMNEY TOPS VIA ROAD PRONG The Chimney Tops, rising to an elevation of 4740 feet, at once attract the attention of the traveler because of their ruggedness. The hike for this year has been planned to see even more mountain laurel and rhododendron than in previous years. Drive on State Highway 71 (Indian Gap Highway). Park the cars at the "Chimney" sign, near the junction of Road Prong and the highway. Cross over stream on the foot log and follow the old Indian Gap road to Beech Flats. Turn right at upper end of Beech Flats and plunge through a laurel thicket until we come to the creek. Follow the bed of the creek, right fork, until a small cliff is seen. Just above the cliff a branch flows from a ravine. Follow this ravine to the ridge top. Turn right at this point through another laurel thicket up, up, and up and come out by the taller or south chimney. Everyone will want to cross over to the north chimney to get the view. Return by the route taken in previous years, coming out a little below the cars. This is a new route up Chimney Tops, a little longer, but not as steep. June is the month for rhododendron and mountain laurel, whose blossoms should be at their best at this time. See how many different varieties you can find, including new ones along the new route. 28

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1934 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
