The Board of Directors shall be called to meet by the President, or three of their members, on a day's notice to each director either personally or by mail. A majority of the whole Board of Directors shall be necessary to constitute a quorum for the transaction of business at any meeting. (A further statement of their duties and powers is here omitted). ARTICLE VI Elections and Meetings. The annual meeting of the Club shall be held in the early fall .... notice to be mailed by the Secretary to each active member at least five days before the meeting. Special meetings may be called by the President or Board of Directors. Officers shall be installed at a meeting of the Club in December of each year and shall hold office until the installation of their successors. The President shall appoint a nominating committee but this shall not preclude members from making individual nominations. ARTICLE VII Dues. The annual dues of active members shall be $3.00, on payment of which each member shall be entitled to receive one copy of the annual handbook and shall receive advance notice of hikes and other activities. ARTICLE VIII Discipline. Any member who by his conduct violates any of the provisions of the constitution and by-laws, or rules of conduct, or code of ethics may be expelled from membership by the Board of Directors in meeting assembled by a three-fourths (%) vote of all directors, provided that said member shall have been given at least ten days* notice in writing of such pending action. ARTICLE IX Amendments. These by-laws may be amended at any regular meeting of the membership of the Club, or at any adjourned session thereof, or at any special meeting called for said purpose, provided that a notice of the subject matter of the proposed imendment be sent to each active member ten days before such special meeting. 74

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1933 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
