  • The Champion Fibre Company was located in Canton, North Carolina, just east of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This 4-page brochure includes “facts and figures” about the company. Including the fact that Champion owned 140,000 acres of timber and hoped to take advantage of an additional 750,000 acres of nearby National Forest. Champion employed 1,500 men and moved 2,000 tons a freight daily. While the company touted its output, its operations required over 35,000,000 gallons of water a day. Issues concerning water and timber conservation helped push the idea of a park in the region.
