  • the higher mountains to the south. Lunch will be eaten along the trail, so canteens are necessary. Their destination will be Millstone Gap where, many years ago, a road crossed over this high mountain range. Leave Dixie System at 7:30 a. m. Total motor distance about 40 miles. Total hiking distance to Dupont and return, about 5 miles and to Millstone Gap and return about 12 miles. Take canteen and food for one meal. Leaders: POWELL MAY (3-6121) NORVALL TAGGART (3-1161) INSTRUCTIONS TO LEADERS The duties and obligations of the hike leaders include the following: 1. Know the trail, or learn it before the date of your hike. 2. Confer with your co-leader in advance and make plans for conducting the hike. 3. Make advance arrangements for lodging where necessary. 4. Be at Dixie System 15 or 20 minutes before scheduled time for departure. See that cars are ready, assign hikers to cars, etc. 5. Assume full control of party on hike. One leader shall precede and guide the party, the other shall bring up the rear. See that camp or lunch sites are cleaned up and that fires are extinguished before leaving. 6. At the beginning of the hike make am announcement to the party concerning the route, lunch site, etc. 7. Meet with the Board of Directors the month preceding your hike, for discussion. 8. Make a list of members and visitors on the hike and send it to Miss Mary Casenburg, Secretary, P. 0. Box 454. 9. After conducting your hike this year, please report in writing to Miss Mary* Casenburg any suggestion for making it a' better hike next year. 60
