  • SEPTEMBER 16 and 17 A. T. WORK TRIP—DEALS GAP TO TAPOCO AND YELLOW CREEK MOUNTAIN Doubtless the work trips will have become quite popular by the time of this hike, so it will not be necessary to further explain that part of it here. This trip, however, presents a number of choice views. For instance, there are those alluring glimpses of Parsons and Gregory Balds from the various angles. Hangover looms up boldly before us at many points along this route. We get a close-up of the Cheoah Dam and Lake at Tapoco, with the opportunity to go thru the power plant, if time permits. The views of Cheoah Lake and the surge tank at the Rymers Ferry plant, as seen from many places along the crest of Yellow Creek Mountain, are quite interesting. We see the Deals Gap-Bryson City road winding its serpentine course along the gorge of the Little Tennessee River. We enjoy fleeting glimpses of charming Lake Santeetlah in the distance. These are just the headliners. There is something interesting along every foot of this trail. Then, the opportunity to help re-clear and remark a portion of the Appalachian Trail is an added incentive to make the trip. Leave Dixie System at 1 p. m. Driving distance 134 miles, round trip. Hiking distance, approximately 14 miles, over relatively easy trail. Take 2 canteens and food for 3 meals (unless night is spent at Tapoco Lodge, in which case take food for one meal). Take tent and blankets or stay at Lodge. Leaders: BOB BURCH (2-6101) E. P. CALLAHAN (2-5520) 54
