  • in-j suits for a jolly swim after the meeting. Leaders: Jim THOMPSON (2-5287) and E. J. MEEMAN (2-7475). June 12, 13, 14 FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING APPALACHIAN TRAIL CONFERENCE, AT GATLINBURG (See Page 54) June 13 and 14 These dates may be changed if necessary better to accommodate our visitors. Due notice will be given if change is made MT. LECONTE VIA RAINBOW FALLS AND DOWN ROARING FORK CREEK It is a bit presumptous to say that any certain trip in the Great Smokies is best. Some excel in one respect, some in another. But, for height of mountain, variety of wildflowers, variety and size of trees, spectacular waterfalls, breath-taking panoramas and beauty of trail (with a few miles of untrailed wilderness thrown in) it is generally agreed that—if it is not actually best—at least there is none better than the trip up Mt. LeConte by Rainbow Falls and down the untrailed Roaring Fork Creek. This is one of the trips that has been especially selected for Appalachian Trail Conference visitors and for members and other friends. None of this route is included in the Appalachian Trail, but from Mt. LeConte we can see at least three-fourths of the 75 miles of the Appalachian Trail which passes through the Great Smokies. Those who are not already at Gatlinburg attending the Appalachian Trail Conference must leave Knoxville by 12:30 P. M. Saturday so we can start from Gatlinburg by 2 o'clock. This will enable us to reach Cherokee Orchard and be ready to start biking by 2:30. It is 4.1 miles from "the orchard" to LeConte 31
