  • Unusual Weather Patterns To Be Expected For *83 Season Bryon Middlekauff Department of Earth Sciences Global weather has been continuously in the news during 1983 primarily because weather patterns have been very unusual. Many abnormal weather events in 1983 may all be connected meteorologically including: l)extreme drought in Mexico, Indonesia, southern Africa, and Australia, 2)heavy storms along the California coast last winter and spring, 3)wet weather in the sunbelt of the United States during springtime with accompanying floods of the Mississippi, 4)heavy snowpack in the Rocky Mountains that lasted well into May and June, 5)the near absence of a winter in the eastern United States, and 7)the unusually wet "monsoon" season in Arizona, Utah, and Nevada this summer. El Nino (Spanish for "The Child") is a name applied to a general warming of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean along the coast of Peru. El Nino is periodic and recurs approximately every seven years. Many meteorologists have suggested that this most recent, and unusually strong, oceanic warming has had global effects on weather. Toward the end of the calendar year a warm current usually begins to flow south along the coast of Ecuador toward Peru bringing with it warm surface water. Because of the timing of the event, the local residents named it El Nino. This past year El Nino has been unusually strong and more widespread resulting in a significant, large-scale oceanic warning, ing. If the phenomena were confined to the eastern Pacific, it would be of little interest globally, but since the warming has spread toward the west into the central Pacific it,has world wide implications. The warm surface waters, whose cause is still unclear, triggers oceanic and atmospheric responses that are felt around the world. Upwelling cold water, 'prevalent along the coast of Peru, is the heart of the anchovy fishing industry. Anchovies feed in the nutrient- rich chilled bottom water. But when El Nino becomes powerful and long-lasting, as it has in 1982-1983, the anchovies move elsewhere, subsequently, the Peruvian fishing fleet has remained in port for much of this year. The last strong El Nino in 1972-1973 reduced the fish catch by 50%. Since much of this fish catch is converted to meal and exported for poultry and hog food, pork and chicken prices may rise later this year and next. It appears that the severe El Nino is also transmitted into the atmosphere by displacing the normal location of the Jetstream, a rapidly moving, circumglobal air flow that has the ability to transport heat and cold and generate storms. Such changes in the Jetstream can result in significant disruption of weather patterns such as rains where dry weather is normal, drought were low precipitation receipts are expected, cold, stormy winter season where mild winters are usually the case, and warm wintes where great snowfalls are anticipated. The economic and human costs of this year's El Nino event is beyond an accurate count and it will be years until the exact toll is known. But meterologists hope to learn from this episode since a great deal of international corporation has been generated. The data collected over the last 12 months should shed a great deal of light on this oceanic/atmospheric disturbance and perhaps a prediction of the next El Nino will be a reality, tion of the next El Nino will be a reality.
