  • JULY 1 and 2 SILER'S BALD VIA FISH CAMP PRONG AND MIRY RIDGE The Siler's Bald trip is six weeks later this year and shorter; in fact the 4.3 miles between Siler's and Clingman's is left off. We begin our hike from the auto parking ground above Elk- mont, ford the creek twenty, or is it twenty- two, times after which the ascent develops gradually, climaxed with a short steep pull to the State Line. Visit this western end of Great Smoky and become acquainted with the lighter- green hardwoods, the beech, birch, and hard maple type in contrast to the dark-green conifers, Fraser fir and red spruce, to be found eastward. Some may wish to continue on along the State Line beyond Siler's to Double Springs Gap where this transition is so striking. You may want to sample the water from these two springs to convince yourself which is superior, Tennessee or North Carolina, even though they are less than a stone's throw apart. There will be ample time Sunday for we want to camp over night near the broken down lean-to just west of Siler's Bald. It is to the west towards Buckeye Gap and Hall's cabin that last year's party had their dramatic experience with the elements. Saturday, March 5, was a bracing, sunny day, but at dusk a dense fog descended without warn- In£ upon the mountain. Then followed a deluge of rain, which in an hour changed on the mountain crest to snow. What an experience, the numbing exposure in the open of long night hours m 8 degree weather! Such is the mood of Old Smokv. 39
