Misemer Athens Tenn in care of Elisha Brient I want to know whether you got it or not Tell Lizzy and Charlie that I am glad to hear that they are going to school and learning so fast I want them to, learn fast so that they can write me a letter Well Martha I have written to you so often and about so many things and not knowing whether you have got my letters or not --- I hardly know what to write if there is any thing that you want to know about let me know and I will try to Tell you we are still camp- -ed in Decatur and there is no telling when we will leave here I think we will leave here this fall perhaps in the course of a Month we are not needed

In this letter of August 17, 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his "Dear wife," Martha Misemer, from Decatur, Alabama. He shares where his company has been staying and about the fights they have had with the Rebels and that no one from his company has been killed. He mentions Rebel women and says they will fight before giving up the Confederacy. He asks if she received the money and the goods that he sent. He wants the kids to learn to write quickly so they can write to him. He sends his respects to Dr. D. and any inquiring friends.
