Cocke-Sevier county line. The Guyot map gained some local currancy for for it is used in that mountain classic "Heart of the Alleghanies" by Ziegler. The negative of-an enlarged photograph of the Great Smoky section of the map has been deposited in the lawsom-McGhee Library. 6 Roy H. Ozmer has made a typed copy, which is for more servicable than the original Guyot manuscript, in the handwrit:ing of the"photographer". Paul M. Fink, after exhaustive research and a most careful checking of elevations has prepared a list of the present day names of all of the Guyot peaks. Probably the most difficult of all to locate was Guyot's "Three Brothers, highest or central peak". .What peak in Eastern Smoky does this decriution fitl A comoarison of elevations and a * A * traverse of the route in 1930 iddicated that this was unquestionably the peak which bears the descriptive name of "Old Black" in North Carolina ■-faccL'ouS and is known in Tennessee by the more-#&fiMa6w*s designation of "Lumadaha". in There is/the Guyot manuscript one very curious error- in the light of present day knowledge and perhaps it is the only error. Guyot says; "£-—Several of the highest points of the Appalachian System are found on the Western side,,though not on the chain itself -«— Such as the triple mountains of Bull Mead 6,613 feet—- —the group first ascended and named by Buckley Mounts Guyot, Alexander, and Henry —--which is according to my measurements higher still 6,636 feet. -both of which are very near the watershed, but outside in Tennessee." The location of Mt. Guyot as off the state line affords an interesting speculation. An examintion of Guyot's route possibly throws some light §a this error. Guyot reached the State Line form the Horth Carolina side by the way of Bradley and Straight Forks. He notes the elevation of the house of his guide through the Smokies, Robert Collins, who lived in the last house up on Bradley Fork. This circumstance helps to identify -6-

This 27-page manuscript recounts the involvement of Arnold Guyot in the Great Smoky Mountains. A geologist and geographer, Arnold Henry Guyot (1807-1884), began his exploration of the Appalachians in 1849. His purpose was to record the elevations of various peaks and develop a systematic geographic outline of the mountain systems of the eastern United States. The manuscript was collected by George Masa. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Myron Haliburton Avery (1899–1952), was president of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and chairman of the board of the Appalachian Trail Conference.
