  • Falls on Road Prong of Last Prong of Little River. was approved by President Coolidge. On May 8, 1926, Representative Thatcher introduced in the House a bill to provide for the establishment of the Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. The Congress passed this bill and it was approved by the President. On February 25, 1927, the General Assembly of North Carolina passed an act to provide for the acquisition of land in the Great Smokies for the national park and authorized the issuance of bonds for $2,000,000 for use in acquiring the lands. On April 27, 1927, the 'Tennessee legislature authorized a bond issue of $1,500,000 for the purcht.se of park lands and donated tracts valued at $500,000. Each State also appointed a park commission clothed with authority to buy- lands and deed them to the Federal government. Colonel David C. Chapman became chairman of the 'Tennessee commission and Mark Squires of the North Carolina commission. The minimum boundary for the Great Smoky Mountain- National Park was set at'427,000 acres. 86
