miles beyond mouth of Bear Creek. Bridges are out beyond this point. Hike along road to Junction Camp. From camp, Huggins Trail leads north along Huggins Creek, across creek, and finally up a ridge to main divide 1 mile east of Siler's Bald, hollow Appalachian Trail to Bald. Distances: along road to Junction Camp, 4.5 miles; camp to main divide, 3.75; to Bald, 1 mile. From Junction Camp to main divide, Class B 'Trail. (5) Forney Creek Trail. Drive car up Forney Creek road as in trail (4). Hike along road to mouth of Jonas Creek, turning left along Jonas Creek and branch of creek to Welch Ridge. Then up Welch Ridge to Siler's Bald. Distances: along road to mouth of Jonas Creek, about 3 miles; mouth ot Jonas Creek to Siler's Bald, about 5 miles. From mouth of Jonas Creek, Class B Trail; good. Sllers Bald was named for Jesse Richardson Siler (1793- T876), for many years a prominent citizen of Franklin, N. C. He owned, at one time, this mountain on which he ranged large herds of cattle. Soco (Bunches) Bald: On southeastern boundary of park, in N. C. Soco Gap Trail starts at Soco Gap and goes UP ridge to Soco Bald. About 2.5 miles. Fair trail. Spence Field: On main divide. Elev., 4,886 ft. (1) Eagle Creek Trail. Leaving N.C. #288, follow ^agle Creek to Spence Field, 6.5 miles from park boundary. Class B Trail. (2) Drive up Hazel Creek road, turning left along Haw Gap Branch for about 1 mile. Leave car. Trail goes up Haw Gap Branch for short distance above park boundary, hen turns left to Jenkins Ridge, then along Jenkins Ridge to Haw Gap, west of Blockhouse, then descends across head w Eagle Creek and the old Anderson Road, and up State "Oe to Spence Field. About 7 miles. Class B Trail. (3) Haw Gap Branch. Drive cars up Hazel Creek and Haw Gap Branch and park, as in (2). Follow Haw Gap Branch for about 0.75 mile to branch turning right to a ridge. 55

Description

This 146-page “Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park” was published in 1933, a year before the park was formally established. In spite of this oddity, the guide does carry the approval of the National Park Service, stated on its cover. The book was printed in a small format as a field guide that could be carried on a hike. Topics covered in the guide include tours and trails, notes on camping and fishing, and sections on flowers and fauna. Separate sections deal with local culture, including “The Highlanders” and “The Cherokee Indians.” The guide was written by George McCoy and George Masa. McCoy was a staff writer for the Asheville Citizen and native of Dillsboro, North Carolina. Photographer George Masa, a native of Japan, was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
