  • Chimney Tops. General Description ( "^HE Great Smoky Mountains range is the roof of ^ / Eastern America. Here the Appalachians reach their J most majestic proportions in a region of untamed and primeval grandeur. Lofty peaks, dense forests, dashing streams, and knife-like ridges—all are found in this mountain climax of the Eastern United States, the master chain of the Appalachian system. "Nature is at her choicest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park," said Ray Lyman Wilbur during a visit to the region in 1932 while Secretary of the Interior. To those who know the Great Smokies it is apparent why the Southern Appalachian National Park Commission said, in 1924, that of the several possible sites for a national park in the Appa- lachians "the Great Smoky Mountains easily stand first lie- cause of the height of the mountains, depth of valleys, rug- gedness of the area, and the unexampled variety of tree-, shrubs, and plants."
