  • westerns* • arolmian Cats Win in Home Finale, 24-0 First shutout since 1992 by Daniel Hooker The Western Carolina Catamounts braved the early rain to shut out the reeling VMI Keydets, 24-0, Saturday at E.J. Whitmire Stadium in the final home game of the season. With the shutout, Western erases a 56- game shutout drought that lasted from 1992, when the Cats shut out Ferrum 42-0. It also was Western's first shutout of a Southern Conference opponent since 1986, when they bested the same VMI Keydets, 34-0. Oddly enough, both games were at home and in the rain. Western, still in search of a winning season, improved their record to 3-5 on the year, 3-4 in conference play. The struggling Keydets fell to 0-8, 0-5 in the Southern Conference. The game marked the final appearance in front of the home crowd for the WCU seniors. They, along with their parents, were honored in the pre-game ceremonies. Head Coach Bill Bleil commented, "The last home game of the year is always an emotional game—we've got three games left, and this one was a good one to jump-start those with." The day started out bleak for the purple and gold. As game time approached, a disheartening cloud hovered over Cullowhee, dropping a cold rain down upon pre-game festivities. Yet, as the kickoff sailed to Tracy Biggs, the rains let up—but the early misfortunes didn't. Sophomore quarterback Shawn Snyder fumbled the second snap from senior center Alex Sprinkle, and the Keydets recovered on their own 24-yard line. However, the Western Carolina Catamount defensive unit set the standard for what would be a long day for VMI. On four plays, the Cats held, forcing the Keydets to attempt a 39-yard field goal that went wide. The Cats' defense shut down VMI all day long, holding them to 198 yards on 68 P'ays, an average of only 2.9 yards a play. "They were better physically than we expected," stated Bleil, who won his third game Biggs blasts through Keydet line. Photo by T.K. Roberts as a first-year coach. "But, when your defense can put you in the position to score like ours did today, you're on the way to becoming a good football team." He went on to add, "It's hard to pitch a shutout against anybody, and our guys did a great job. [Allowing] only 198 yards on 68 snaps is exceptional." Several players played key roles on the defensive side of the ball for WCU. Senior Marcus Bradley, who leads the Southern Conference in fumbles caused, fifth in total tackles, and third in quarterback sacks, was crucial in stopping the Keydet offense. He finished with 8 tackles and a fumble recovery. Also playing big for the Cats' defense was junior Brett Chappell. He finished with 7 tackles, 3 sacks for losses totaling 30 yards, and 4 tackles for a loss, equaling 33 yards. Yet another big factor in stopping the run was junior transfer Anthony Jenkins. He finished with 4 tackles for losses. Bleil spoke highly of Jenkins. "Anthony's going to be an impact player in this Cats to Encounter Christians by Daniel Hooker The Western Carolina Catamount football team will head east to tangle with the 6-3 Won College Fightin' Christians this Saturday in Burlington. Coach Bill Bleil's team is riding high atter defeating the Keydets of Virginia Military institute last weekend, 24-0. They will have to wm all of their three games to make Bleil's aetmt season a winning one. Elon will be no pushover. This sea- «». with its wishbone option offense, Elon has "een successful. Running behind redshirt freshman Derrick Moore and sophomore DeWayne nomas, the Christians have tallied 289 points wnne only relinquishing 206. Western Carolina head coach Bill ZI Siated that his feam would "have their hands full" with Elon. ( "Elon has got some good athletes. let? fe'ecruiting [Division] I-AA-type ath- nJ,?; 7IheyVe a good f00tba11 team," commented Bleil. "We have struggled at times stopping "Ption teams. They have done a nice job with the option offense," he mentioned. On defense, the Christians are led by senior Reggie Ignash. He has been in double digits in tackles in just about every game this year. Bleil stated that he was "a good athlete and football player." Western will be the Homecoming opponent for the undefeated home standing Fightin' Christians in Burlington's Memorial Stadium. Another interesting note is that Western has won only 3 out of 14 games at Elon's home field. With the rival Appalachian State Mountaineers coming up next week, the Cats can't afford to overlook Elon. Bleil thinks that the team will "motivated to get up and play" the Christians. The Christians hold a 16-12-1 advantage over the Catamounts, but WCU has won the last four, and 6 out of the last 7. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Burlington, N.C. Live coverage of the game will be provided by the Catamount Sports Network, and the game can be seen on tape delay on WDLB- TV league. It's hard for an August [junior college] player like Anthony to adjust to a new system— it usually takes 6 or 7 games—and Anthony has done an exceptional job." Jenkins simply stated, "I just played my gap and tackled them when they came through it." The Catamount offense got things rolling late in the first quarter. Taking the ball from their own 24-yard line after a VMI punt, the Cats drove 78 yards in nine plays to hit pay- dirt. Sophomore Brad Hoover bolted over the right side for a 17-yard, punishing romp to the end zone. The next score for WCU was set up by the defense. Senior Marcus Bradley recovered an Al Lester fumble at the VMI 30. After three plays with minimal gains, junior kicker Ken Hinsley connected on a 48-yard field goal, giving the Catamounts a 10-0 lead that the Cats carried to halftime. First-year VMI coach Ted Cain said, "I'm proud of the way our kids fought the whole contest. We had our chances early in the game to go up on them. We had some chances to do some things, but we did not execute well." He added, "Western runs a variety of things on defense, but once we settled down, we moved the ball in spurts, but couldn't knock it in when he had to." In the third quarter, the Cats added to their score. Capping off an 89-yard drive that took 14 plays and nearly five minutes off the clock, Brad Hoover scored for the second time in the game. This one came on a pass from sophomore quarterback Shawn Snyder. Western's final score came with 11:58 remaining in the contest. Shawn Snyder, who has been 7 for 7 in scoring opportunities with no interceptions since stepping in at quarterback, delivered a 32-yard strike to senior receiver Andy Bush. The big pass play ended a seven-play, 69-yard drive. Snyder, who was 15 of 30 passing for 143-yards, commented, "We've still got a chance for a winning season, and I think the fellas realize that. We'll just take it one game at a time." The next task will be the Elon College Fightin' Christians. Western will travel to Burlington for a 2:00 contest next Saturday, November 8.
