Tremendous mountain masses cover an abundance of interesting details and scenery. In the lower valleys communities nestle under the protecting ranges. derfully varied forest primeval that covers the Smokies with living verdure to their very summits. "Bare rocks may rise to awe-inspiring heights, they may be sculptured by nature into striking forms, they may be toned by the elements and colored by atmospheric changes, they may be robed in snow and jewelled with glittering ice, they may be majestic in calm or terrible when tempests rage or when avalanches thunder down the slopes; but bare rocks are never lovable. The stony bosom is cold. "But when the mountain frame work is covered with trees and shrubbery and flowers, grasses and ferns and moss, which harbor an infinite variety of animal life, then every peak becomes a personality it-

The “Great Smoky Mountains National Park” brochure was created to showcase “the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina.” Within its 24-pages, the commission provided an update on the status of the future park and promoted its development as “a great playground that will have no equal in the world.” The brochure quotes Horace Kephart and Robert Sterling Yard, Secretary of the National Parks Association, and includes photographs by Jim Thompson. Clearly thinking nationally, the commission included a map at the back of the brochure with mileage to the site listed from cities throughout the East Coast.
