  • 18 Western Carolinian March 21,1996 Sports WCU Women's Track Southern Conference Champions by Collin Webster Staff Reporter The Men's and Women's Track and Field teams opened their outdoor seasons competing in the Clemson Relays at Clemson University Saturday. Head Coach Danny Williamson said, "You could tell that we'd been away at Spring Break. We can still make ourselves a much better team." On the men's side, Brian Clark made a good showing for Western in the meet's first race, the 10,000 meters. Clark finished third, running a personal best of 32.24.84. Western's Jack Murphy placed sixth with 33.22.07. In the Decathlon 400 meters, Jarrett Foster finished third with a time of 56.44. Foster also placed second in the pole vault, vaulting 15' 3.5 " . Jimmy Johnson and Ernest Moss placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the triple jump with leaps of 45'00.5" and 44' 08" . In the men's relays, Western's 4x200 team of Edwards, Boyce, Monroe and Wilson finished third (3.29.07). In the 4x400, Boyce, McCray, Monroe and Wilson put their efforts together to clench third in 3.29.07. Western's sprint medley relay team of Ballard, McCray, Wilson and Beuchner also managed to capture third in 3.44.06. On the women's side, Western finished second in three relays. In the 4x100, Western's team of Gabriel, Bailey, Person and Mateen ran a combined time of 48.15. The 4x200 team of Gabriel, Bailey, Person and Haybie finished second with a time of 1.45.11. The 4x800 team of Donahue, McManus, Beck and Redmon took second running 9.19.85. Western's 4x400 team of Person, McManus, Donahue and Redmon took third place with a combined time of 3.53.56. Recognizable individual performances were highlighted by LaSha Jackson's third place effort in the shot put (44' 11.75"), and Robyn Stockunas' third place throw in the hammer throw (128'09"). Williamson added that "We still have a lot that we can improve upon." Western holds its annual WCU Invitational track meet Saturday, hosting teams from UNC-Asheville, Brevard, Furman, East-Tennessee, and Clemson. "This will be a good meet for some of our athletes who haven't had good performances," Williamson said. "It will be a good chance for them to step it up." Williamson encourages everyone to come out and support the cats. The meet will begin at 10a.m. Lady Cats Southern Conference Champions.
