  • Fredricksburg with a large force we can't maintain this position with the force that we have here. A few days ago I heard of the death of Tolliver Hughes. I was sorry indeed to hear of it. I had no idea when he left Goldsboro but what he would get home and recruit up before long. I have passed the time dull since I heard of his death for I could pass the time better in camp with him then any body else. I want you to write to me soon and let me know whether he appeared to be satisfied to die or not and what he talked about before his death. I also want to know whether you got the ten dollars and the clothes that I sent by him or not. I suppose you have heard of the act of Congress forcing all men in for the War between the age of 18 and 35. Those that is in service that is over 35 will be disbanded in 90 days. Wm. Jones will come home in about 80 days as he is over 35. When he leaves I had as live leave the Regiment as not. If you can see any body in Rutherford that is over 35 years of age, I will pay him something extra to take my place and I will come home and go to a mountain Regiment where I think I would have my health bet ter. You need not try any body that is under 35 for they will have to come anyhow. Frank Shehan is in this camp and wants his father to come to him and you can tell his Daddy if he will come and take my place, I will pay him something extra. I don't expect to go out of the service but I want to go to a mountain Regiment. I wrote home for some summer clothing before I left Goldsboro. If you have the chance you may send me one cotton shirt, but don't send no more till I write for it. I have not had narry letter from home since Lt. Twity came and I want you to send me some black Powders as soon as you can. So I must close. Make all the money you can and if I never get home give the other children good learning. As we may leave here in a few days you can just direct to Richmond, Virginia with directions on the letter to forward to our Regiment. G. J. Huntley
