Out to see us. I work on the Naval Base here but I don’t much like it. I don’t care much for California. Oh enough about me, how much longer are you going to be there at Paris Island. It’s near so you can get down on liberties to Savannah I suppose you will get a long leave. Gee I wish I could get home for Christmas and see you. Are you going to stay in the Navy or get out? Bill is thinking of being a 20 year man and reenlisitng. We haven’t decided yet. He already has six years in. Just think Frank just has about two more years in the Marines. I wish you could have seen him too. I haven’t see him yet.

A letter from Mrs. W. L. Young to Samuel Owens about everyday life. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
