I can inform you all that Goldsborough is the nicest place that I ever saw in my life. The cars run here from Raleigh and from Richmond and from Weldon and from Newbern and from Wilmington, and the telegraph also from several places. We can get the news from Richmond in Virginia here in ten minutes and we can get papers that is printed in Richmond in the morning here by two o'clock. If you was here three hours you would see more than you ever saw before. I cannot say when we will leave here, but I expect before long. We are placed here because there is railroads running to so many places so that we can be sent to any place that we are needed the worst. I have no doubt that you all heard of Burnsides expedition or fleet of war vessels that is expected to attact the southern coast before long. Some think that our coast will be attacked above Wilmington, others think that the Georgia or South Carolina will be attacked. Our Regiment will remain here till that fleet makes an attact and then we will go there certain. It is just owing to the movements of that fleet when we leave here. We have got our overcoats and our pay too. I shall send money home before long if I have to send it in a letter. I want you to make all the truck you can this coming year for it will be worth something. I want you to write to me as often as it is convenient for I like to hear from home. Wm. Jones and Tolliver Hughes is both well and getting along as well an any of the rest. Tell all the rest to write and give me all the news. As I am in a hurry to eat dinner, I must close with saying excuse bad writing. I will right more the next time. Just direct to Goldsborough N.C. 34 Reb NC Vol in the care of Capt Simmons G. J. Huntley [side note:] Goldsborough is distant from Raleigh 50 miles which makes us 300 miles apart.

In this letter of January 17, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to friends and relations from his location in Goldsborough, NC which he says is the nicest place he has seen in his life. They are in a house until the weather clears and then they will put up their tents at the fair grounds on the edge of town. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
