I think we will be either stationed on the Back Road from Decator to Stephen-son or be sent to the front in Georgia most likely the latter we boxed up our over coats and left them in Nashville and it is said they were marked in Cleaveland whether they were or not I dont know Martha I sent you a silk apron a small pistol a knife to Charlie and an old comfort and a letter by Billy Maxwell write to me whether you got them and the things the Bill called for that I sent By John Wright or not I dident buy them shoes I give Wright the money to buy them not knowing wether I would get a pass to go to town the day he started or not I did get one but he had bought them when I got there I saw they was no account But it was too late and I said nothing

In this letter of June 27, 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his "Dear wife," Martha J. Misemer, from Athens, Alabama. He sends her encouraging words for her low spirits and tells her to trust and pray to God. He tells her they marched for eight days from Nashville to Athens, Alabama and shares logistics of the war and their future. He wants to know if she received the 50 pounds of rice and other goods and money he has sent her. He lets her know that he received the socks she sent and sold two pairs as he had no place to put them. He explains that he spent his money foolishly for fear it would be stolen out of his pocket, but now that he can send it to her, he does that. He thinks the war will end this summer and happily shares the news that Abe Lincoln was nominated again for president and Andrew Jackson for vice president.
