Richmond to keep the Yankies from getting them if there should be a fight here and we had to fall back. So I must turn to other things. I want you to write whether you ever got the money and the clothes that I sent home by Tolliver Hughes. I have wrote several times to know about them. I got the socks and the powders that Wm. Martin brought. I wrote home for a pair of drawers and a shirt and in addition to them you may send one pair of summer britches. Don't send any more than I write for. Just send me one pair drawers, one shirt, one pair pants. I sent a pair of s hoes home by Scot Hill when I was at Goldsboro. Write whether you got them or not. Tell Tincy she had better save all the wool she has in place of knitting socks to give away. You well know the worth of woolen cloth next winter. Bryants Old Koot is coming home and I am going to send my carpet sack and my woolen jacket by him to Ben Washburns. If you can get to send letters by hand just direct to Richmond, Va., with directions to be forwarded. Capt. Wm. Martin will be coming to this Regiment before long. G. J. Huntley

In this letter of May 20, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends about his journey to Spotsylvania County, Virginia where his camp is now within sight of the Yankies. There are skirmishes every day between the pickets, but no regular engagement yet. His camp is ready to leave on five-minutes notice, but he doesn’t know where they will go. He speaks about the camp conditions and says that he saw his cousin George Wilkie about two miles away in another Regiment. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
