THE CULLOWHEE YODEL Mr. and Mrs. Allen Entertain Thursday On Thursday evening, February 23rd Mr. and Mrs. Allen entertained with a rook party. Those present were Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Posey, Miss Benton, and Miss Reams. A jolly good time was had throughout the evening. Mrs. All' a served lovely refreshments consisting of chicken salad, saltines, pickles, coffee, ice cream, cake, and nuts. Mrs. Posey and Miss Reams were presented with linen hanker- chiefs as birthday remembrances. Why I Never Have a Beau Did you ask me, dear Hattie, If I had a beau? You may never believe me But I shall say, "no." So homely am I That I keep them away And I long for a lover As I travel each day. The road to my home is Both rugged and long, And boys from a distant Never tune on my song. I never primp much, For I think it's no use. And when one appears I r i like a And then if I like him, I'd lose him of course, And I'd feel like crying Till I made myself hoarse. And after it's over, I dream again soon, But I've dreamed 'till I'm aching And my heart's in a boom. An old maid is homely But an old maid is free; So I guess an old maid Is more becoming to me. When I am still homely And traveling each day, A smile of a lover Won't be in my way. • And so those tender hands you had Brought pretty flowers to make sick glad; And then there came a dread di- And yet it brought to your heart Then many a soul did pass away; Some died by night and some by day. And all at once, what did you think Your tender nurse's heart did sink. For there upon the humble bed Lay your lovely Gabriel's head, But he was dying meek and mild, Yet you were happy as a child. —Hazel Hooper Seventh grade Ifs If Gladys is White, is Edna Green? Evangeline After the seventh grade in the Training School had completed the study of Evangeline, the teacher suggested that some of the pupils might like to write a poem about Evangeline. Next morning Hazel Hooper read to the class the following poem: EVANGELINE. Oh dear, your life has been long and hard While searching for your long lost pard; I know you had a patient brain, To search right on so hard in vain. I know your heart was very sad, When you found not that lovely lad, Although you gave not up your plan; But searched right on for the brave man. Your heart could not be satisfied, But you like any faithful bride Did not give up the bitter task Until your days were nearly passed. + Then to the sick you gave your % life, + And worked so hard with all your + might % You put your trust and faith in % God, And left your footprints where you trod.
