The signing of Bailey pushes the track and field program at WCU another step towards nat ional prominence, Baileys super efforts earned him the state championships In both the two-mile run and cross-country this past season • a rare feat for a high schooler. His twc~mile time of 9:25ranks him with the finest in the South east, He also has turned in a fine 4:22 timing in the mile run and showed plenty of speed in anchoring the Jetsmilerelay team with several times of around 51 seconds. Ben, a modest, well man^ nered eighteen year old, was voted "Athlete of the Year" at Enka High. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank C, Bailey of the Keeves Cove section. Enka's track coach, Roger Metcalf, calls Bailey "the most dedicated boy I've ever coached." Metcalf further expressed his feelings about the signing. "I'm glad to see Ben sign with Western. Not only are they building a great program but he will be close enough for me to watch his progress." Bailey had numerous offers from other schools including N (' State and Furman, . . . .FROM Page 17 Rhyne nearby... However, after the Cats marched 61 yards In a dozen plays after taking the kickoff, it seemed that all of Waters concern was for naught Tall- back Otis Mcintosh put the Cats on the board for the first time in 1970 with a one yard plunge. A few minutes later, it app eared to be a Catamount rout when Harvey Walker returned a Carson-Newman punt 43 yards before he was stopped. A penalty stymied the Cats as the score rose to 10-0, Carson-Newman came back strong and wiped out the Cat" amount dreams of a shutout when they scored on a 35 yard pass play. On the second play of the second quarter, Mcintosh flashed that old familiar style as he danced and darted through a half-dozen Eagle defenders on a 27 yard TD run. Corley's kick made it 17=6. A fantastic catch by split end Steve Spradling set up the next WC U score, quarterDack Conrad Cardano hit eight end John Davies on a beautiful pattern in the corner of the end zone as the Cats threatened to blow the game wide open with eleven minutes still left in the half. Once more Carson-Newman came back. This time an interception set up the score and the teams went into the halftime break with WCU holding a 23 14 lead. The third quarter was a per= iod of punts, fumbles and interceptions. The Cats drove deep into Eagle territory midway of the quarter but were stopped on a busted play. The Cats got on the board again early in the fourth period when Woody Woodruff Intercepted a C-N pass at mid-field to set up another Corley field goal. This one was from 33 yards out as "S u gar foot" showed his invincibility from 40 yards in. The icing was on the cake with 7:38 to play when quarterback Hal Mote, who took over at half time, hit catback Paul Smith on a beautiful 45 yard pass.
